FROM STRUCTURALISTIC EXTERIORITY OF THE SIGN TO THE CONCEPTS OF THE CIRCLE OF BAKHTIN AND GUNTHER KRESS

Abstract

In this paper, we intend to look at the notion of sign from a number of linguistic perspectives. Considering that there is a robust cartography of epistemological foundations that deal with meaning, sense and, consequently, the sign, we take a few steps to try to understand how this concept and, consequently, the notion of language are treated in some theoretical perspectives. First, we reflect on the concept of sign from the perspective of the structuralist paradigm, gounding on the ideas contained in Saussure (2006) when he addresses aspects such as arbitrariness, linearity, mutability and immutability of the sign. Secondly, we discuss how this notion is approached by the Bakhtin circle (Volóchivov, 2017), situating the break with the philosophical orientations of the idealist subjectivist and abstract objectivist, thus bringing the notion of sign into the enunciative scene, as a product of the interaction of socially organized individuals that emerges in a concrete and ideological context. Finally, we discuss how the contributions of the Bakhtin circle resonate in Social Semiotics, proposed by Hodge and Kress (1988) Kress (2010) when treating the notion of sign as motivated, non-arbitrary and that unfolds in materialization in other semiotic modes and opens the way to think about a synthesis of ontological perspective of meaning production. The mapping of the approach to the concept of sign within these linguistic perspectives highlights the importance of how this concept has been debated and, today, in postmodern times, marked by social networks and big techs, how sign making is being glimpsed.
