Comparative study between Libras and LGP with a focus on toponymy

Abstract

Brazil comprises 26 states and the Federal District, while Portugal has 18 districts and 2 autonomous regions, which are islands. This geopolitical organization underpins this toponymic study, comparing Brazil and Portugal. The names of these states and their municipalities are referred to in linguistic studies as toponyms (from Greek: topo- (place), -onym (name)). This article aimed to understand which category, native or borrowed, is most frequently observed in the signs used by deaf communities in naming Brazilian and Portuguese states. Therefore, this paper discusses data collected from signs in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) and LGP (Portuguese Sign Language), analyzing the motivations behind the forms according to the subcategories based on the method described, such as calque, initialization, fingerspelling, letter-based formation, and hybrid (Souza Júnior, 2012). The theoretical foundation draws on researchers who presented analyses of sign language toponymy, such as Souza Júnior (2012), Aguiar (2012), Urbanski (2019), Ferreira; Xavier (2019; 2021), and Miranda (2020). Its importance is highlighted by analyzing their typological meanings through the places' cultural repertoire and historical context. Structured interviews were conducted with participants from both Portugal and Brazil, and signed videos created by deaf individuals were collected and processed through the YouTube platform. The results showed a prevalence of the native category, due to the higher quantity of instances compared to other categories in both countries.
