Facial expressions in the writing of affirmative sentences in Brazilian Sign Language

Abstract

This present work presents a segment of the results from the study that investigated the comprehension of Non-Manual Expressions in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language). Grounded in Ferreira-Brito (1995), Quadros and Karnopp (2004), Stumpf (2005), and Quadros, Pizzio, and Rezende (2008), we discuss the spatial-visual nature of sign languages, presenting their parameters and focusing on Non-Manual Expressions. The methodological procedures consisted of applying two writing tests to students of the in-person Letras Libras course at the Federal University of Santa Catarina. The first and second tests dealt with activities proposing a relationship between columns. In the first one, there were columns with phrases that did not contain graphic symbols of Non-Manual Expressions in the SignWriting system, while in the second one, such symbols were graphed. Thus, it was possible to verify the difference in reading comprehension with or without the writing of Non-Manual Expressions in the system. In the tests, students had to connect the column indicating to which category of sentence the sign language phrase belonged, such as affirmative sentences, negative sentences, Y/N interrogatives, WH interrogatives, interrogatives expressing doubt and suspicion (can be signed with one or two hands), WH interrogatives that appear in subordinate sentences without the interrogative non-manual marking, conditionals, relatives, constructions with topic, constructions with focus, and sentences expressed through eye gaze direction. For this present work, we selected the results of errors and correct answers presented in affirmative sentences, verifying if need to graph such symbols of expressions in sign writing. In general, students made more errors in tests without Non-Manual Expressions, while they had many more correct answers in tests that included Non-Manual Expressions, indicating the syntactic-grammatical necessity of graphing such symbols of expressions in sign writing.
