A Terceira onda variacionista: continuidade ou descontinuidade de fases?

Resumo

A sistematização dos estudos da sociolinguística variacionista em três ondas (ECKERT, 2012), ou fases, organiza, de certo modo, os trabalhos que vêm sendo realizados na área desde a década de 1960. Refinando essa sistematização, este artigo objetiva discutir a (in)adequação epistemológica (e teórico-metodológica, por conseguinte) da aproximação entre as ondas com base em argumentos favoráveis e desfavoráveis à ideia de continuidade/complementariedade entre as fases. De cunho interpretativista, esta investigação constitui-se como pesquisa bibliográfica e examina Eckert (2000; 2008; 2012; 2016a; 2016b; 2018), Labov (2001, 2010), Eckert e Rickford (2001), Coupland (2001; 2007, 2014); Camacho (2013; 2015) Bell (2001; 2014; 2016), Eckert e Labov (2017), Hernández-Campoy (2019; 2020), dentre outros autores. As reflexões apontam para a possibilidade de duas diferentes interpretações sobre a relação que se estabele entre as diferentes fases variacionistas: por um lado, a de que há um continuum epistemológico entre as três fases, de modo que seus preceitos se encontrariam integrados, na terceira onda, ensejando uma  teoria de variação robusta; por outro lado, a de que “não” há um continuum epistemológico entre as três fases, uma vez que a primeira fase se harmonizaria com procedimentos de uma abordagem estrutural e a terceira fase, com procedimentos de uma abordagem antropológico-discursiva, ensejando, essa última, uma teoria de variação robusta pelos aspectos que lhe são constitutivos (e não por uma integração de preceitos das três fases). Diante da discussão desenvolvida, destacamos a relevância de a área se debruçar sobre esse controverso ponto metateórico.
