Language as a practice of freedom: Paulo Freire’s contributions to the internationalization of education from a dialogical and decolonial perspective
Abstract
The internationalization of education has been consolidated as a strategic axis of educational practices on a global scale, often guided by discourses of competitiveness and the standardization of knowledge. In this context, this article aims to analyze Paulo Freire’s contributions to the construction of a humanizing conception of the internationalization of education, understanding language as a practice of freedom and dialogue as the ethical and political foundation of education. The study is qualitative, descriptive, and bibliographical, based on a critical reading and interpretation of Freire’s works, especially Education as the Practice of Freedom, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, and Pedagogy of Autonomy. The results indicate that language, in Freire’s perspective, is a creative and emancipatory act, capable of transforming the world and promoting listening and co-authorship among subjects and cultures. It is concluded that the internationalization of education, when guided by a dialogical and solidarity-based ethics, can constitute an emancipatory practice that promotes social justice and epistemic plurality, reaffirming the role of language as mediation between knowledges and as an expression of human dignity.
