Comprehension, Acceptance and Usage of Nonbinary Forms Among Portuguese Speakers

Abstract

The emergence of nonbinary (NB) forms is a recent phenomenon that is still not well understood (Freitag, 2024). Our goal is to contribute to this area of research by analyzing the perception of NB forms among native (L1) and non-native (L2) speakers of Portuguese. Participants evaluated the comprehension, acceptance, and usage of four linguistic forms: NB, binary, standard, and non-standard. The study also investigated whether the vocative position and the length of the phrase would affect the perception of NB forms. A total of 248 people from various parts of the world (e.g., Brazil, Angola, the United States) evaluated 14 sentences in an online survey. While NB forms are less understood than the other forms, they are considered more accepted and more commonly used than the non-standard form, contradicting the common belief that NB forms are rejected by speakers. The preference for NB forms over other socially stigmatized forms also suggests a possible prestige hierarchy among non-hegemonic varieties. While NB forms do not favor the vocative position, there is a significant preference for their use in shorter phrases, suggesting that this type of structure may be a linguistically favorable environment for the incorporation of NB markers into the system.
