Abstract

Here, we investigate the structure NP dar para VINF with modal meaning. The verb dar can be used as a modal or as an inchoative/iterative verb: Deu pra gente ouvir bem os discursos (We could hear the speeches well) and O João deu pra sair mais cedo do trabalho (João started to leave work earlier), for example. We are interested here in investigating a relatively new structure in Brazilian Portuguese, namely: the construction with modal dar in which the subject NP of the embedded clause moves to occupy the position to the left of dar, as in A gente deu pra ouvir bem os discursos (We could hear the speeches well). Our investigation attempts to answer two questions about these constructions: (i) Being linearly identical, are the structure with modal dar and the one with aspectual dar the same or are they two distinct structures?; (ii) Why the subject raising in the innovative structure with modal dar? We will argue that the answers to these questions are as follows: (i) there are characteristics that allow us to believe that we are facing two distinct structures; and (ii) the fronting of the NP in the innovative modal dar clauses is motivated by principles of restriction in the grammar of BP against starting the clause with the verb, as postulated by Duarte and Kato (2014, 2021) with the “Avoid V1” principle. The study of this innovative configuration adds to other works that attest to the changes that BP is undergoing and that seem to be related to the change in the marking of the Null Subject parameter.
