"Praise be to God!" – regarding external input
Abstract
This article discusses the acquisition of religious expressions that were not directly addressed to the child but are used by them. The hypothesis is put forth that children learn words and expressions that do not occur during dialogues with their parents, but in broader contexts of dialogic interaction. The extension of input in conversational interactions is proposed. With this objective, data from a longitudinal naturalistic oral corpus collected from a monolingual Brazilian Portuguese-speaking family consisting of a mother, grandmother, and son will be presented. The principles of the interactionist approach, which emphasize the very importance of dialogues, are assumed for this research.
