Two notions of dependence

Abstract

In this text, we are going to distinguish between two concepts of dependency from their uses by Hjelmslev (1975) and Tesnière (1965); therefore, we intend to identify their respective concepts from two epistemological dimensions: the metaphysical choice to justify them and the kind of kinship acquired among the units of analysis. The aim is not exactly to explain (we do not intend to discuss the most adequate way to interpret the concept of ‘dependency’ in these authors), but to establish criteria based on the reading of these two authors, who helped us to conceive conceptual tools to observe, understand, and explain linguistic phenomena. In addition to that, from a historical point of view, this text aims at recovering a part of the syntactic theory that has been little spread across Brazil.
