Abstract

Being able to express emotions in the language of communication of a place of migration can greatly facilitate migrants' full participation in the host society. However, language teaching curricula developed specifically for migrants often do not focus on this aspect and, as a result, migrants often experience difficulties in expressing the emotions they feel or intend to convey. Recently, the need to incorporate the teaching of emotional intonation in the ELE classroom has been pointed out (Carbajal-Carrera et al., 2020) in order to avoid intercultural misunderstandings (Dewaele, 2010), given that in the expression of emotions in Spanish, melody seems to play a fundamental role (Garrido, 2011; Padilla, 2020). The present study aims to describe the melodic features of the expression of joy in L2 Spanish spoken by native Chinese learners of spanish immigrants residing in the Community of Madrid. 10 Chinese participants (B1 level women living in Madrid) read 10 utterances simulating joy (10 utterances x 1 emotion x 10 participants). These utterances were analysed melodically using the Melodic Speech Analysis method (Cantero, 2002; Cantero and Font-Rotchés, 2009). After the qualitative analysis of the data, five melodic patterns of the expression of joy were found.
