The short book of sociolinguistic disquiet

Abstract

The episode of mesoclitic clitic placement in the Former President Michel Temer inauguration discourse is the point of departure to a reflection about the relationship between   traditional sociolinguistic social meaning – like prestigious, or self-identity – and political dimension of language. The basic assumption made here is that the traditional sociolinguistic categories are not sufficient to explain the way the presidential use of clitic placement do works. Moreover, it is necessary take in place the memory effects attached to such syntactic structures and for explaining them, it is necessary to come back to XIX century linguistic normative crisis that coincides with the establishment of republican system in Brazil. It is remarkable that clitic placement emerges in many significant moments in Brazilian history, as a symptom of crucial relationship of order and disorder, barbarism and civilization, in our projects of nationality.
