The relation between prosody and the null subject in Brazilian Portuguese

Abstract

This text reviews Prof. Mary Kato’s conference entitled Determinantes prosódicos em mudança sintática. Kato traces the trajectory of some studies on the Null Subject Parameter in Brazilian Portuguese (PB), explaining the main findings on the theme, as a way of presenting the new developments on: the syntactic change that exists in PB regarding the filling in of the subject position; and the insertion of prosodic and stylistic factors with effects on change. The conference offers important contributions to the study on the parameter of the null subject in Brazilian Portuguese, summarizing what has already been discussed, at the same time that it points to new paths to be followed.
