Socio-historical-political aspects and the danger of extinction of indigenous languages

Abstract

This text is dedicated to the review of the conference Línguas indígenas, línguas ameaçadas given by Professor José Ribamar Bessa Freire, at the event Abralin ao Vivo –Linguists Online. At the conference, a socio-historical panorama of indigenous languages in Brazil is outlined, in addition to the professor clarifies how linguistic policies interfered in the process of disappearance and hegemony of the Portuguese language. The lecturer, in a warning tone, talks about the deaths of indigenous peoples that occurred due to the coronavirus pandemic, which constitutes a new threat to indigenous languages, and reflects on strategies for preserving these languages.
